Nondescript Buildings

I love interesting architecture. Whenever I see new construction going up, I always get curious about the design of the building. There are really cool designs especially for certain types of buildings such as museums and buildings for green businesses. However, there are a lot of buildings being constructed today that are quite nondescript in terms of their exterior appearance. Although they may not be very interesting to look at from the outside, many of these buildings have stuff inside of them that’s quite interesting.
For example, there are several Atlanta colocation buildings that are completely forgettable from the outside. These are buildings where a bunch of servers are stored so that people interested in colocation services can have their websites hosted from outside of their own buildings.
Buildings that contain important things like a large number of services may almost need to be boring on the outside. The people who own and use these servers wouldn’t want a bunch of neighbors knowing just how valuable the contents of the building are. That would put them at risk of a break-in. Instead, they keep the buildings nondescript and people passing by never know what important stuff is going on inside those walls!

That’s a good point, you wouldn’t want to be too obvious about what you have inside your building, but at the same time, I think there’s something really powerful and strong about a beautiful building. Think of like old school banks–those look mighty and impenetrable, and I assume there’s some pretty intense security.
I studied architecture in school! I absolutely loved it. There’s something unbelievable about the ways that cultures choose to shelter themselves, express themselves, and articulate their lives with stones and mortar and wood.
